(iv) Auction Round 6
In September 2024, the results for the sixth
CfD auction round (AR6) were announced,
with a total of 9.6GW of renewable energy
capacity securing contracts. A record-breaking 3.28GW of capacity was awarded to
solar PV. Two new offshore wind projects
won contracts, totalling 3.3GW, along with
400MW for Green Volt floating offshore
wind. This marks a positive shift after the
lack of offshore wind bids in AR5.
•
reduce the cost of energy from floating
wind;
•
accelerate the build-out of floating
farms;
•
create opportunities for the UK supply
chain; and
•
drive innovations in manufacturing,
installation and operations and maintenance.
The resurgence in offshore wind participation was driven by a series of budget increases, rising from approximately £200 million
in AR5 to approximately £1 billion, and then
further boosted to £1.56 billion by the new
Labour government.
Around 1.5GW of offshore wind capacity
cleared through the Permitted Reductions
rule, which allows developers to withdraw up
to 25% of capacity from previous CfDs and
re-enter AR6 to seek higher strike prices.13
(e) Innovation – Floating Offshore Wind
In October 2019, the UK Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult launched the Floating
Offshore Wind Centre of Excellence, backed
by funding from the Scottish government,
the Catapult’s Welsh centre and support
from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local
In January 2022, the UK Government set out
plans for a £60 million funding injection for
the development of floating offshore wind
technologies. Comprised of £31 million
of government funding matched by £30
million from industry, the funds are designed to stimulate development through the
Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration
Programme. This forms part of the £1 billion
Net Zero Innovation Portfolio focusing on
the development of innovative low-carbon
technologies.15
(f) The Offshore Coordination Project
In March 2020, National Grid as ESO, Ofgem
and BEIS (the former Government department responsible for energy, which has
been replaced by the Department for Energy
Security and Net Zero) set up a project
