CT-REQ-2995 Advancing Racial Justice Pro Bono Report 01 TW V3 - Flipbook - Page 5
Our team assisted the family in all stages of the criminal process, including successfully opposing
the perpetrator’s requests for modified pretrial release conditions; engaging with the prosecutor’s
office regarding the appropriate plea offer; and assisting our clients and interested community
organizations with preparing victim impact statements and community impact statements.
Ultimately, the perpetrator pleaded guilty to these crimes and was sentenced to seven months in
jail and supervised probation for 18 months.
Putting pen to paper
Our colleagues around the globe also provide critical research and drafting support for
organizations dedicated to anti-violence. For example:
•
Alongside PeaceTech Lab, we published a
comprehensive report about the laws and
regulations governing online hate speech
across more than 20 jurisdictions. More
than half of our nearly 60 volunteers sit in
our Continental Europe offices.
•
We supported the U.N. Special Rapporteur
on Trafficking in Persons by providing
information on international human rights
law to the Inter-American Commission on
Human Rights. Primarily, we identified that
current systems fail to protect domestic
workers who are exploited in diplomatic
households, which has a disproportionate
and discriminatory effect on women
of color.
•
In the U.S., more than 30 attorneys and
paralegals contributed to a quick-reference
guide and an expanded toolkit for the
National Indigenous Women’s Resource
Center. These documents provide a
comprehensive overview of tribal, state,
and federal laws, jurisdictional authority,
key contact information, and other
practical resources to help Native families
and communities in cases of missing and
murdered Indigenous women.
•
Our Indonesia and Vietnam offices provided
research to the International Justice Mission
on slavery and human trafficking. Our review
covered national legal frameworks related
to trafficking, forced labor, and exploitation
of workers; government structures and
plans to implement those frameworks;
and a broader look at existing international
cooperation on the issue.
